Covers in stone

01/02/2013

From it does centuries, covers, cupolas and vaults of stone cover stood out spaces of our surroundings. Example of this is the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in which the slabs of granite allow that his cover was transitable. Besides, the have of stone in the cover of a project allows to give continuity with the revestimiento of all the façade what characterises to the constructions by the homogeneity of the group.

However, in the contemporary architecture the stone is not the most used material in cover well by his own weight or by the fear of entrance of water. This last, would not have to be a problem since the granite in particular has a low coefficient of absorption what comports a greater resistance to be crossed by the water.

For the design of a cover is important to take into account a series of factors: resolve the overlaps between the pieces in covers bent, ensure that the boards of dilatation find very sealed, contemplate a good dried of the slabs in covers adhered,...

The covers of granite can classify as they are adhered or floating. The Centre of Exhibitions and Congresses of Ávila of Francisco Mangado shows in his details the two types. Also it has floating cover the House Mercedes of Creus and Carrasco in A Coruña.

The covers adhered characterise by the settlement of slabs of two or three cm of thickness on mulch of mortar, layer of regularisation and plate waterproof. The floating, are the constructive solution more adapted for accessibles covers that consists in supporting the slabs on 4 or 5 adjustables wedges (plots).
